DigitalOcean Premium Intel vs Premium AMD

TL;DR go AMD if you can.

With DigitalOcean introducing two new classes of CPUs we at VpsCritic couldn't wait to give them a shot. Over the next few days we'll test different instances but from our initial tests it looks like AMD is the way to go with a 20% lead in our GeekBench 4 and GeekBench 5 tests on the 1gb-1cpu instances, and a 10% lead on the 2gb-2cpu instances.

August 2020 Disk Benchmark Update

Over the last few months, we've seen more and more providers implement caching for disk I/O. While this is great for bursty type loads this benefit is greatly diminished for sustained-type workloads.

At VpsCritic want our scores to better represent the performance you will have in a production environment and to that end, we will be separating our disk benchmarks into two sections

  1. Burst tests - these are run for 10s and give a good idea of how your application will perform if your work…

Into the future with GeekBench 5

From today (August 2nd 2020) all Linux VPS benchmarks will include GeekBench 5 scores.

What about the good ol GeekBench 4?
No worries, they aren't going anywhere. We will still continue to benchmark servers with GeekBench 4 and the results will be clearly marked on our vps overview and compare pages.

Will you eventually deprecate GeekBench 4?
There are no plans to do so anytime in the near future. We will reconsider our position on this on the release of GeekBench 6.

How to use our 'VPS Plan' search

We've recently revamped our VPS search logic to give significantly more relevant results. Here's a short primer to get you started.

Where is this search?

You can find it at the top of the right sidebar or on the compare page.

How does it work?

The search essentially looks for three things

1) The provider
2) The name of the plan
3) The price of the plan

For the best results you searches should take on the format

<provider_name:optional> <plan_name:optional> <price:optional>

How we do VPS Awards

It's almost time for our first ever VPS Awards and so to prevent flooding our very first post with a lot of technical information, we decided to create this post explaining the methodology of how we compare servers and award... well... the Awards.

We have three (3) main categories; Server Resources, Server Performance and Other with a weighting of 50, 45 and 5 respectively.

Each is further broken down as follows:

Server Resources (Weight: 50%)

Disk Size …
